What a friend we have in Jesus

I just had fun with this old hymn, mainly because when I heard it as a kid in church, it didn’t sound very friendly. It was always sung slowly and solemnly.  So with this arrangement, I tried a latin/brazilian beat, and fused it with the old hymn “There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus, no not one”. In the middle, there’s an extended bridge of just percussion and the violin, which improvises on themes in both songs. I made it the title song, and the CD artwork is intended to capture the idea of friendship (thanks to graphic designer Peter Ngyuen).
